I stopped at Noodles last night to pick up dinner on my way home at 8 last night and a young man behind the counter probably around 20 started talking to me asking me how my day had been and than he shared with me how he had been up at 6 and worked 8 hours on the Hometown heroes project as a volunteer on sight before he did his shift at Noodles. He was very excited and enthusiastic about his contribution to the project and said he has been volunteering as much as possible because it made him feel so good! Lynette Kelley
I stopped this am to pick up some Red Bull. First of all I don’t drink Red Bull as a habit or any energy drink…my caffeine of choice is coffee. However since this project started I must admit that I have consumed a dozen or so cans of this stuff that basically tastes like cough syrup. The stop was the local gas station and as I came up to the counter there was a women in front of me…while I am not into guessing ages especially of women… I will just say she was a senior. To her left on the counter was a can…not a fancy can…the old coffee can with a big slit in the plastic top and wrapped around the can was a handwritten note asking for donations for the Hometown Heroes project. As this women got her change (which was .50) she paused for just a moment and reached over and dropped the coins in the can. She looked at the man behind the counter and said, “those are really nice people to be helping this family” and of course she was talking about you! I quickly felt a bit of pride for all of you I heard her say this. She then said, “the man said dollar by dollar we can help, I hope he is happy with my change”….she quickly looked at the man behind the counter as she began to leave and said, "don't tell my husband!"
For me, this $.50 provides all the energy I will need this day…I am so happy that I don’t have to drink my cough syrup. Have a great day…mine is starting out with extra energy…hoping this provides you with a little. Jim Kacmarcik
Hello! I am a fifth grade teacher at St. Joseph Parish School, where Karen Longoria works. All of us here at St. Joe's love Karen so much and are so completely moved at the outpouring of caring and compassion from this community. On Friday, October 31st many of the staff from the school volunteered at the construction site. It was hard work but oh, so rewarding!!! Thank you, thank you, hank you for your hand in organizing this amazing and remarkable event. This is something that I will remember for a lifetime! Blessings, Julie Dich
Jeanie Lukes, Kapco's receptionist, received a phone call last week from a gentleman requesting information. I put him on hold to locate someone to assist him and when I returned he commented on Jim’s “on hold” message about the Hometown Heroes family. He said it was, by far, the nicest “radio spot” he has ever heard. He said he can’t believe a company would be so generous and do something like this. He said he wished there were more companies in San Diego like Kapco. He said there was a family, he knew, who was suffering from a fire four years ago and after 9 months of struggling with the insurance company the foundation finally went up only to be hit again by fire this year. They were devastated.
